Social proof and school ratings and reviews

Why students seek testimonials and quotes on your website

There is a great statistic from the 2016 E-Recruiting Trends Report from Ruffalo Noel Levitz that 60% of high school students have sought testimonials and quotes on a university's websites.

Why? Because consumers in every product category look for social influences that help validate decisions. Social proof, also known as informational social influence, is a psychological phenomenon where people review the action of others to reflect correct behavior for a given situation.

We are constantly seeking information to help validate our decision making process. Schools share social proof today when they share their US News rankings (experts) or current enrollment data (wisdom of the crowds), but rarely are they sharing the type of social proof prospective students really want.

Prospective students want to find someone like themselves and get validation from current students or recent graduates that they are satisfied with their decision. Produced videos and tours are great for messaging, but don't provide enough social proof as neither represent a broad selection of students. If you are using videos leverage your students and alumni to create their own stories, and ensure you have enough content to speak to all your different personas and key majors and programs.

Student and alumni reviews also can be extremely powerful. When’s the last time you made a meaningful purchase without glancing at the reviews? The ratings provide a level of quantifiable evidence, and the reviews provide mass quantities of testimonials students are searching for today. Your students are using ratings and reviews for social proof in all their decisions today, whether on Amazon or Sephora.  Most organizations are sitting on a wealth of user content in their student surveys or can easily survey their alumni for their key programs and majors.

If you want to improve your social influence across your web and social assets develop strategies to put social proof to work using experts, user videos, and student/alumni ratings and reviews.
